This Thursday, Join the ACLU of Utah and Planned Parenthood at a Rally for Choice
Thank you to those of you who contacted your state representative to express your concerns regarding HB 235 S1 “Abortion Law Revisions,” which sought to prohibit abortions in Utah except in extremely limited circumstances. Yesterday, the House of Representatives substituted the ban with a so-called “trigger” bill, which would impose an abortion ban if the United States Supreme Court ever overturns Roe v. Wade, its 1973 decision upholding a woman’s constitutional right to reproductive freedom.

The fight is far from over. This legislature has demonstrated that it wants to take away a woman’s right to choose, and, with more than two weeks left in the 2007 legislative session, anything can happen.

This Thursday, February 15 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Utah State Capitol Plaza, the ACLU of Utah and Planned Parenthood are sponsoring a Rally for Choice.

Come join us as we remind the Utah State Legislature that Utahns support a woman’s right to choose and that we do not want legislation that limits that right. Rather than supporting an abortion ban, we ask that legislators focus their efforts on reducing the need for abortions by supporting common sense solutions aimed at reducing unintended pregnancies in Utah.

Ask Your State Representative to Support HR 2 “Resolution Opposing Real ID Act”
Today, the House Government Operations Standing Committee approved HR 2 “Resolution Opposing Real ID Act,” which urges Congress and the United States Department of Homeland Security to suspend the implementation of, or repeal the federal Real ID Act.

President Bush signed the Real ID Act in May 2005 after Congress passed the law without any hearings or real consideration of its consequences. If Real ID is accepted and carried out by the states, it will turn state driver’s licenses into a genuine national identity card and impose numerous new burdens on taxpayers, citizens, and immigrants.

Real ID also creates huge administrative burdens for state governments, while providing no federal funds for implementing its onerous requirements. In a January 30 article, the Deseret News reported that the director of the Utah Driver License Division has estimated that implementing Real ID could cost Utah $250 million.

State representatives need to hear from their constituents today that they oppose Real ID and support HR 2 because:
  • Real ID does nothing to combat terrorism.
  • Real ID puts us at greater risk for invasions of privacy and identity theft.
  • Real ID is an unfunded mandate for states and could cost Utah millions in tax dollars.
Last month, Maine became the first state in the nation to reject participation in the Real ID Act. Following Maine’s lead, the Houses of Representatives in Vermont, Wyoming, Montana, and New Mexico each voted in favor of bills that reject Real ID. Ask your representative to add Utah to the growing list of states that are saying no to Real ID.

The Constitution grants the government its power and the Bill of Rights restricts that power and guarantees individual rights and liberties. The ACLU of Utah works to ensure that our government respects these limits.
