Christopher M. Finan President American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression Christopher M. Finan is the president of the American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression (www.abffe.com), which was established by the American Booksellers Association in 1990 to defend the First Amendment rights of booksellers and their customers. Finan has been involved in the fight against censorship for over twenty-five years. He is chairman of the board of directors of the National Coalition Against Censorship and a trustee of the Freedom to Read Foundation. The ABFFE is currently a plaintiff in the ACLU of Utah case The King’s English v. Shurtleff. A native of Cleveland, Finan is a graduate of Antioch College. After working as a newspaper reporter, he studied American history at Columbia University, where he received his Ph.D. in 1992. He is the author of “Alfred E. Smith: The Happy Warrior” (Hill and Wang), a biography of the New York governor who was the first Catholic to run for President. His new book, “From the Palmer Raids to the PATRIOT Act: A History of the Fight for Free Speech in America,” will be published by Beacon Press in May. Finan is married to Pat Willard, a writer whose most recent book is “Secrets of Saffron.” They have two sons and live in Brooklyn, New York.
