Blocking Faith, Freezing Charity
Posted 6/24/09 - A report from the ACLU shows how U.S. terrorism finance laws hurt legitimate charities helping Muslims in need. Muslim Americans are intimidated from donating, which restricts their ability to freely practice their faith: one of the five pillars of Islam is Zakat, the practice of charitable giving that is a religious obligation.

Utah Legislature Considers Drug Testing for Government Aid Recipients
Posted 6/22/09 - The Utah Legislature is considering suspicionless random drug testing of those people receiving government assistance. The ACLU of Utah, along with our community partners, is opposed to this as an unwarranted search and seizure as well as an invasion of a person's privacy.

LGBT Legal And Advocacy Groups Decry Obama Administration's Defense of DOMA
Posted 6/16/09 - The Obama administration has defended the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in a brief filed in the case Smelt v. United States, a lawsuit brought in federal court in California by a married same-sex couple asking the federal government to treat them equally with respect to federal protections and benefits. The administration is using many of the same flawed legal arguments that the Bush administration used. These arguments rightly have been rejected by several state supreme courts as legally unsound and discriminatory.

House Passes Bill Banning Body Scanners at Airports
Posted 6/9/09 - The ACLU of Utah has opposed the use of these scanners, currently in use at the Salt Lake City International Airport, and applauds Representative Chaffetz for introducing and passing this legislation. People should be aware that they may "opt - out" of the full body scan.
