Free Public Forum Examines the Impact of an
Olympic Event on Individual Liberties
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wednesday, March 24, 1999
SALT LAKE CITY – On Thursday, March 25 at 7:00 p.m., Salt Lake Impact 2002 & Beyond, the
Utah Housing Coalition, and the American Civil Liberties Union of Utah are sponsoring a free public
forum entitled 2002: A Threat to Your Liberty? The event, which will take place at Spaulding Hall
in St. Mark’s Cathedral on 231 East 100 South, is the second in a series of public forums
examining how the 2002 Winter Olympic Games may impact Salt Lake City residents
Thursday’s forum will feature Gerald Weber, Legal Director of the American Civil Liberties Union of
Georgia, and Anita Beatty, the Executive Director of the Atlanta Taskforce for the Homeless.
Weber and Beatty worked closely together during the 1996 Summer Olympics, and they have a
unique perspective on the impact that such an event can have on a city’s low-income and homeless
communities, as well as on civil rights issues in general. From homeless sweeps, to increased
security, to limitations on public protests, an Olympic event can compromise fundamental
constitutional protections. Weber and Beatty will examine what happened in Atlanta, and what civil
rights activists and low-income service providers did – or wished they had done – to prepare for the
summer Olympics.
For more information about the event, please call Glenn Bailey at Crossroads Urban Center, (801)
364-7765 or Cori Sutherland at the ACLU of Utah, (801) 521-9862.
