Copper Hills High School Revokes Discriminatory Dance Policy

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 22, 2004

SALT LAKE CITY--On December 21, Jordan School District administrators announced that Copper Hills High School has revoked its policy requiring same-sex couples to obtain parental permission before attending school dances.

On December 7, the ACLU of Utah wrote a letter to the Copper Hills High School principal after being contacted by several students and parents concerned with the school dance policy. That letter outlined the school’s duty to uphold students’ Constitutional rights and to provide a safe school for all students.

"The ACLU of Utah is pleased that Copper Hills High School has taken action to ensure that all students are treated equally, regardless of sexual orientation," said Margaret Plane, Staff Attorney for the ACLU of Utah.

The December 7 letter is available at http://www.acluutah.org/Copperhills.pdf.
