High School Seniors:
Become an ACLU Student Activist Scholar
and Receive Financial Aid for College!

The ACLU of Utah is offering one $1,500 and two $750 scholarships to high school seniors who have taken a stand to protect civil liberties! These winners will be forwarded to the national ACLU which is offering 16 of the nation's most committed young civil liberties activists $12,500 each toward their first year in college. Those students will then become part of a special group of youth activists whose talents and passion will be fostered by the ACLU national office, and who will be invited to participate in ongoing activities and training's in Washington D.C. and New York City.

Local Youth Activists are also National ACLU Scholarship Winners! Two of the three young women who received the ACLU of Utah's Youth Activist Scholarship Awards last November have been named as winners of the National ACLU Youth Activist Scholarship Competition! To qualify for the scholarship you must:

  • Have demonstrated a strong commitment to civil liberties through some form of activism;
  • Be a high school senior planning on entering an accredited college or university as a full-time, degree-seeking student; and
  • Have attained a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale at the time of graduation.

If you are passionate about protecting and fighting for the constitutional rights of everyone, fill out and return the Student Activist Scholarship Program Application by November 7, 2008.

Past national scholarship winners were recognized for a wide variety of civil liberties activism including:

  • Starting an organization to inform students and faculty about high school military recruitment efforts that targeted students of color;
  • Working to defend free speech and political expression in the school newspaper;
  • Creating a documentary about the internment of Japanese Americans;
  • Fighting for racial and socioeconomic justice in area high schools;
  • Advocating for comprehensive sex education and youth rights;
  • Fighting against the harassment and bullying faced by gay students by starting a gay-straight alliance.
