home The ACLU of Utah Union and the ACLU of Utah Foundation: What Is the Difference? The American Civil Liberties Union of Utah is comprised of two separate corporate entities: the ACLU of Utah Union (or the Union) and the ACLU of Utah Foundation (or the Foundation). Although both are part of the same overall organization, it is necessary that the ACLU of Utah have two separate organizations in order to do the broad range of work necessary to protect civil liberties. This website collectively refers to the two organizations under the name “ACLU of Utah.” Although there is some overlap in the work done by each organization, certain activities the ACLU of Utah does must be accomplished by one organization and not the other. This is primarily in the area of lobbying. Because the ACLU of Utah Foundation is a nonprofit organization and is eligible to receive contributions that are tax-deductible to the contributor, federal law limits the extent to which it may engage in lobbying activities. Therefore, most of the lobbying activity done by the ACLU of Utah and discussed in this website is accomplished by the ACLU of Utah Union. By contrast, most of the ACLU of Utah’s litigation and public education efforts described in this website are done by the ACLU of Utah Foundation. You may make a contribution to either the ACLU of Utah Union, the ACLU of Utah Foundation, or both. A contribution to either organization will be used to support, promote, and defend civil liberties. However, each organization will only use the funds contributed directly to it to carry out the specific activities it conducts as part of the overall ACLU of Utah mission. A donor may make a tax-deductible gift only to the ACLU of Utah Foundation. A donor who chooses to join and become a card-carrying member of the ACLU is making a contribution to the ACLU of Utah Union. Membership dues and other gifts to the ACLU of Utah Union are not tax-deductible.
