Each year, Plan-B Theatre kicks off its season of thought-provoking plays with a special fundraising performance for a local non-profit organization. This year, Plan-B has selected the ACLU of Utah - a long-time partner and collaborator - as the recipient of this honor. That means you can enjoy the WORLD PREMIERE of local playwright Eric Samuelson's new play, "Nothing Personal", while also supporting the ACLU of Utah with your ticket-purchasing dollars!
"Nothing Personal" revisits the Whitewater investigations of the 1990s, examined through the outrageous treatment of Susan McDougal, the wife of a Savings & Loan owner investigated by Special Prosecutor Kenneth Starr. After McDougal refused to testify that she had an affair with President Bill Clinton, she was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison. McDougal spent eight of those months in solitary confinement.
The play recounts many of the facts of the Whitewater case, but the playwright also creatively reimagines McDougal's treatment through the lens of post-9/11 abuses of power. What if Susan McDougal had been treated the way we treated detainees at Guantanamo Bay? When our country feels threatened - either by "immorality" in the White House, or jihadists around the world, what power are we willing to cede to agents of the government? Samuelson's powerful narrative forces us to pay attention to what we are willing to do, out of fear, to those who are vulnerable...and perceived as "in the way" of our political and personal goals.
