17 May 2015 Published in Past Events

We are grateful to all of our incredible supporters and friends who joined us for a wonderful early morning event to celebrate and honor some of the civil liberties heroes in our State.

First, we awarded YOUTH ACTIVIST SCHOLARSHIPS to three brave young youth leaders who are graduating high school this year - Jasper Ramirez, Marcelina Kubica, and Silas Hassrick. You can learn more about their achievements and watch a short video on our website at http://www.acluutah.org/resources/item/991-2015-youth-activist-scholarship-winners

The TORCH OF FREEDOM AWARD was given to the Raise Your Pen Coalition who are a voice of empowerment among Utah’s Polynesian community and Salt Lake City’s west side. In response to the tragic loss of Siale Angilau, Raise Your Pen’s members work tirelessly for racial justice and police accountability. Through their grassroots organizing, they confront systemic injustice with positivity and cultural pride.

The MICKEY DUNCAN AWARD went to Karra Porter, a Salt Lake City attorney and president of Christensen & Jensen. She is co-counsel in our continuing case Redmond v. Bigelow, which alleges Eighth Amendment violations of inmates housed in the mental health treatment facility at the Utah State Prison. Karra also litigates suits confronting excessive use of force by police.

Our KEYNOTE SPEAKER was Jeremy Robertson, president of Salt Lake County Firefighters Local 1696 and one of 480 Unified Fire Authority employees whose Fourth Amendment rights were violated by law enforcement during a warrantless “fishing expedition” through their prescription records. He recently worked alongside the ACLU of Utah in support of successfully passed legislation that requires a warrant before police access records in the state-wide prescription database.

If you did not make it this year, we hope to see you at a future Bill of Rights Celebration or other ACLU of Utah event.
