We oppose this legislation requiring schools to notify parents if their child is transitioning at school, exposing students to the possibility of harmful forced outings to their families. While many parents are supportive, requiring parental consent for a student to treat a student in a gender-affirming manner could place students and school staff in an impossible situation. The ambiguity in this legislation around when parental consent is required may drive young people away from trusted adults at school with whom they may feel more comfortable discussing sensitive subjects. We know that trans youth are more vulnerable to depression and other mental health issues – these provisions could worsen those issues.
