Bio

Aaron Welcher (he/him) is the Director of Communications at the ACLU of Utah, where he leads strategic messaging efforts to advance civil rights and liberties for all people in the state. Since joining in 2022 as the affiliate’s first Communications Director, Aaron has built and led a dynamic team that develops cross-platform campaigns, drives public engagement, and shapes narratives that inspire action.

Aaron’s approach to leadership is grounded in equity, authenticity, and shared power. He believes communications should not only inform, but also connect, empower, and build relationships that fuel long-term change. At the ACLU of Utah, he has brought this philosophy to life, leading with a relationship-centered mindset, mentoring emerging staff, and challenging institutional barriers disproportionately affecting young BIPOC professionals.

A strategic thinker with a data-informed mindset, Aaron has overseen a 567% increase in SMS subscribers year-over-year and helped secure a 149% increase in media coverage. He has led the launch of multi-goal campaigns, including the Community Legislative Action Team, which brought in more than 2,800 new action takers in one year. He also manages media relations, crisis communications, brand strategy, and digital growth across the affiliate’s platforms, ensuring consistent and compelling messaging aligned with the ACLU’s mission and values.

Aaron began his career in Jewish advocacy and community relations during the first Trump era. This experience shaped his belief that true leadership must be rooted in authentic relationships and a commitment to collective liberation, not just institutional preservation. That foundational insight continues to inform how he leads: centering people, listening deeply, and knowing when to challenge systems from outside and within.

He recently participated in the ACLU Executive Leadership Program, where he deepened his skills in navigating complex challenges, fostering resilience, and leading with clarity and purpose. Outside of work, Aaron enjoys exploring Utah’s arts and cultural scene, hiking, and spoiling his two adopted cats, Oliver and Owen. He also volunteers his time with LGBTQ+ community efforts, including past service on the leadership team for SLC Pride.
