For almost 50 years, the Disability Law Center has advocated for people with disabilities who have been denied equal treatment under the law, ensuring their rights are upheld in all spaces, including housing, employment, education, and healthcare. Each year, we provide individual legal representation to hundreds of clients, but we also initiate systemic changes that help thousands of people with disabilities across the State. Whether you have a parent in a nursing home, a child receiving special education services, or a family member with a disability, our agency’s work has contributed to their fair treatment.

The DLC's vision is for a just society where Utahns with disabilities are free from stigma, discrimination, and abuse. They have the authority to make their own decisions and the same rights and opportunities as those without disabilities. Their voices are heard, which inspires discussion and motivates change. Utahns with disabilities have equitable access to supports and resources needed to be as independent as possible and full participants in their communities.

Unfortunately, for far too many Utahns with disabilities, this society is not yet a reality. Even this past year we've seen efforts to limit the decision-making authority of Utahns with disabilities and to restrict their voices through voter disenfranchisement. However, the ACLU has been right there beside us to push back on these efforts, recognizing that disability rights are civil rights. While this collaboration has undoubtedly already protected the rights of many Utahns with disabilities, we know our work will continue together to get to that society we envision.

It is an incredible honor to be recognized by a partner organization for our work advancing the civil rights of Utahns, especially from one that does amazing work in the civil rights arena as the ACLU of Utah. We look forward to continuing our work with them, protecting the civil rights of Utahns with disabilities for years to come.
